Fireplace mosaic – one wall that organises the whole living room

A fireplace is the natural centre of a living room: it is where the eye goes and where the armchairs face. A mosaic on the surround, or across the whole chimney breast, turns that spot into a genuine starting point for the interior. We make fireplace surrounds, panels above the hearth and full chimney-breast walls – in glass, marble and natural stone, composed for the exact dimensions of the wall.

Heat does a mosaic no harm

Glass and natural stone are fired or formed at high temperature, so radiant heat from a hearth does not trouble them. They do not yellow, do not crack with temperature swings and do not lose colour, unlike paint or wallpaper, which age faster by a fireplace than anywhere else in the room. Right beside the firebox we use stone and ceramic; further from the flame, Venetian glass as well.

Three ways to treat a fireplace

First: the surround alone – a narrow band around the firebox, usually a geometric ornament or a gradient. Second: a panel above the hearth, a single image in a stone frame that reads like a picture. Third, the strongest: the whole chimney breast from floor to ceiling, with the firebox becoming part of the composition. For the third option we also design the floor in front of the fireplace so the whole thing holds together.

Texture matters more than drawing

By a fireplace the light is warm, moving and comes from below – quite unlike the rest of the room. Compositions built on texture therefore work best: irregular stone tesserae, iridescent glass, gold among matte tones. Such a surface changes along with the fire. Realistic drawing usually gets in the way by a hearth; abstraction, a gradient or a plant motif work better.

How we work

We start with dimensions and a photo of the wall – and with the question of what colours the floor, the furniture and the surrounding plaster are. We prepare a design, and on request a visualisation in your interior. The mosaic is laid on mesh in our workshop, in segments, and arrives finished – installation on site usually takes a single day, with no chasing and no mess. We send photographs of the work in progress at every stage.

Price

A mosaic costs from 4,000 to 15,000 PLN per m². The price depends on the complexity of the drawing, the number of shades and the materials: a simple gradient or geometric ornament sits at the lower end, a figurative composition with gold at the upper. A surround alone is usually under 1 m², so the job often costs far less than people expect. The estimate is free.

Frequently asked questions

Will a mosaic withstand the heat of a fireplace?

Yes. Glass, marble and natural stone are resistant to the radiant heat of a hearth. Right beside the firebox we use stone and ceramic together with a mortar rated for substrates at elevated temperature.

How much does a fireplace mosaic cost?

A mosaic costs from 4,000 to 15,000 PLN per m². The surround alone is usually less than 1 m². We prepare an exact estimate free of charge – send us the dimensions and a photo of the chimney breast.

Can a mosaic be laid over an existing fireplace?

Usually yes. We need a flat, dry and sound substrate. With older surrounds the existing cladding sometimes has to come off – we assess that from photographs.

How long does it take?

A surround or a panel usually takes 3–6 weeks from approval of the design. Installation on site is most often a single day, because the mosaic arrives finished in segments.

Do you prepare the design?

Yes. We develop the design from scratch, or execute a mosaic to an architect’s finished design. A visualisation in your interior is available on request as a paid additional service.

How is a mosaic by a fireplace cleaned?

Just like ordinary glass, with standard cleaning products. Soot and dust wash off without trouble, and the surface does not absorb smells.
