Kitchen mosaic – a splashback that is not the one everyone else has

The strip above the worktop is the one wall in a kitchen you see whole and look at every day. Usually it carries the same back-painted glass, metro tile or laminate as thousands of other kitchens. We make a mosaic there, cut to your measurements: a splashback above the worktop, a band between the units or a single decorative panel above the hob – in glass and marble, composed for one particular kitchen.

Why mosaic is practical here

Above a worktop the wall takes grease, steam and heat from the hob. Glass and stone absorb none of it – they wipe down like an ordinary window with standard cleaning products, leaving no streaks and no smell. They do not yellow with heat and do not lift like laminate or film. We use epoxy grout, which absorbs nothing, so the joints between the tesserae do not darken over the years.

Three options, starting with the cheapest

Cheapest: a single decorative panel above the hob or the extractor – a small piece surrounded by ordinary tile, often a rosette or a floral motif. Middle: a band between the units, usually 50–60 cm high, with an ornament running the whole length. Strongest: the entire wall above the worktop as one composition. The first option is often under 0.5 m², so getting into mosaic does not require a large budget.

What works well in a kitchen

Kitchen light is bright and even, so – unlike by a fireplace – specific motifs read well: flowers, herbs, fruit, birds, plant ornament, a classical rosette, a Greek key. We match the colours to your doors and worktop rather than to a fashionable palette: with dark doors, pale glass with a touch of gold works well; with light ones, a saturated motif that becomes the feature of the kitchen.

How it goes

We start with the dimensions of the wall and a photo of the kitchen, or the joiner’s drawing. Three things matter: the height of the band, where the sockets are, and where the units stop. The mosaic is laid on mesh in our workshop in segments and arrives finished – installation is usually a single day, with no chasing and no week-long upheaval. It can also go into a kitchen already in use.

Price

A mosaic costs from 4,000 to 15,000 PLN per m². The price depends on the complexity of the drawing, the number of shades and the materials: geometric ornament sits at the lower end, a rich floral composition with gold at the upper. A band of 60 × 250 cm is 1.5 m². The estimate is free – dimensions and a photo are enough.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mosaic splashback practical?

Yes. Glass and stone absorb neither grease nor water and wipe down like ordinary glass. We use epoxy grout, which absorbs nothing, so the joints between tesserae do not darken over time.

How much does a kitchen mosaic cost?

A mosaic costs from 4,000 to 15,000 PLN per m². A splashback of 60 × 250 cm is 1.5 m², while a single panel above the hob can be under 0.5 m². We prepare an exact estimate free of charge once we have dimensions and a photo.

Can it be fitted in a kitchen already in use?

Yes. The mosaic arrives finished in segments, so installation is usually a single day. We need a flat, dry substrate – if there is old tile on the wall it normally has to come off; we assess that from photographs.

How do you choose a pattern for the kitchen?

We ask for a photo of the kitchen or the joiner’s drawing, and the colours of the doors and the worktop. On that basis we propose a motif and a palette. A visualisation in your interior is available on request as a paid additional service.

Will a mosaic take the heat from the hob?

Yes. Glass and ceramic are fired at high temperature, and natural stone does not react to heat from an induction or gas hob. The material does not yellow and does not distort.

How long does it take?

Usually 3–6 weeks from approval of the design, depending on the area and the complexity of the pattern. We send photographs of the work in progress at every stage.
